Staheli Family Farm

I don’t have to look too hard to find something to irritate or upset me. What takes effort and intention is being grateful. To look at the world not to try and find what’s wrong, but to look for what beauty and dignity there is to still be found in it and the people that move through it. To have the gratitude to go to sleep in a bed, under a roof in a safe place, where you’ll wake up in the morning knowing there’s food to be had. It’s about recognizing the hard truth of that because with it comes the acknowledgment that not everyone has that, yet it’s something most of us don’t think twice about. We just take it for granted that what we need will be there when we need it or even just want it. The Code of The West to me isn’t a gimmick. It isn’t something I started to feed my ego. It is in fact the articulation (as best I can manage it) of how I grew up, and also how I took those lessons out into the world as a man. I failed a lot at times. Real failure. Not the trying and coming up short kind, I mean the actual real failure. The kind that comes from no longer trying that comes with giving up on myself, and in turn hurting the people around me and the code itself. But I came back to the west whenever that happened. I climbed peaks through the Wenatchees carrying a crosscut so my body could hurt more than my heart. I accepted that I craved solitude more than attention. I recognized that I had to find time to still work with my hands and find dirt under my nails. I’ve led many lives, had many careers with ups and downs that led me to building this thing, called Code of The West. This attempt to bring back a shared story, to try and help who I can by sharing my mistakes, and lessons learned the hard way, but its this place, and this country that allowed me to shape myself into that tool. That is what I am grateful for. The chance to be me. The chance to find out what that was. A chance to pursue a life, by my own liberty, and over the course of many years, come to know what happiness is. That’s what I think of when I look to the west.
